Mein Forschungsschwerpunkt liegt auf dem Stickstoffkreisklauf in Küstengewässern und Land-Meer Übergängen. Dabei untersuche ich vor allem die Nitrifikation, also die Oxidation von Ammonium zu Nitrate und die Denitrifikation, die Reduktion von Nitrat zu Luftstickstoff. Die Diversität der beteiligten Mikroorganismen interessieren mich dabei besonders. Als Methode benutze ich die Analyse von stabilen Isotopen um Prozesse und Quellen zu identifizieren. Meine Hauptuntersuchungsgebiete sind die Elbe in Deutschland und die Lena in Nordostsibirien.
