Benjamin Klusemann recieves the Professor O.C.Zienkiewicz Prize of NUMIFROM 2023

Established in 1982 by Prof. O.C. Zienkiewicz, one of the pioneers in the development of the finite element method, the NUMIFORM conference series is held every three years. The goal of the international conference is to provide a forum where recent advances and future directions in numerical simulation of forming processes are discussed by engineers and scientists from industry and academia worldwide. The Professor O.C.Zienkiewicz Prize was established in 2016 in honor of the lifetime achievements of Prof. O.C. Zienkiewicz. The award named after him has since been presented every three years by the Steering Committee of the NUMIFORM Conference in recognition of achievements in the advancement of numerical methods for industrial forming processes to young world-renown researchers. This year, Prof Klusemann, head of the Solid State Materials Processing Department at the Hereon Institute of Materials Mechanics, received this prestigious award. In doing so, the jury recognized in particular his scientific achievements to date in the field of numerical simulation of industrial forming processes.

Benjamin Klusemann completed his doctorate in mechanical engineering at TU Dortmund in 2010. His PostDoc position took him to RWTH Aachen. He then served as senior engineer at the Institute for Continuum Mechanics and Mechanics of Materials at TUHH in Hamburg and for a research stay in the USA at the California Institute of Technology. In 2015, he completed his habilitation in the field technical mechanics. Since 2015, he has been professor for materials mechanics at Leuphana University Lüneburg and initially worked as a group leader in the Laser Processing and Structural Assessment department at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon before taking over the Solid State Materials Processing department in 2019. He has already received several awards for his research, including the GAMM Richard-von-Mises Prize in 2017 and the ESAFORM Scientific Prize in 2019. At the end of 2020, he was awarded the ERC Consolidator Grant 2020 MA.D.AM, in which he is developing friction-based processes for material fabrication and additive manufacturing, including a digitized representation of the complete process chain.
