Aquatic Nutrient Cycles

Intact aquatic ecosystems are characterized by high biodiversity. They supply important ecosystem services and provide various resources. To maintain these functions and resources in the long term, the highly productive coastal ecosystems must be used sustainably. This can only be done, however, when utilization is oriented on the overall understanding of coastal systems. In the “Aquatic Nutrient Cycles” department, we study nutrient and oxygen dynamics of various coastal ecosystems, especially of the Elbe River and the North Sea. Our interest lies mainly in the influence of climate change and human utilization on coastal systems. Furthermore, we are involved in coastal system management. We want to develop scenarios for sustainable use and also take into account societal aspects of coastal development that are closely linked to the preservation of the coastal habitat.
