Hydrodynamics and Data Assimilation

The system consisting of the ocean and atmosphere is especially dynamic. Both interact with one another in a complex and, so far, not fully understood manner—particularly because this interaction does not behave linearly due to the water surface oscillating at different frequencies. The “Hydrodynamics and Data Assimilation” department develops numerical models for the ocean, the waves and the estuaries. We concentrate on the interactions of the linked system consisting of the ocean, waves and atmosphere. We develop and use the most modern technology for data analysis and data assimilation. The data is collected with a broad spectrum of new measurement systems that facilitate the development of improved predictions for extreme events. Overall, our work contributes to activities in the focal regions of coast and climate.
