The accelerating growth of data worldwide has facilitated a golden age for data-driven methods as a whole, and for Machine Learning in particular. Our department "Machine Learning and Data" exploits this new wealth of data for virtual material, process, and system development. In particular, systems which are not yet sufficiently understood using theory-based frameworks, or those for which available data vastly outstrips theoretical knowledge, can thus be made available for simulation and analysis. To further this goal, the department sets its focus on joining data-driven and theory-driven methods as well as identifying the specific domains which can most benefit from a better utilization and targeted generation of data.
