Roland Cormier holds an MSc in Biology from the “Université de Moncton” (Canada). He has more than 30 years of experience in fisheries stock assessment, shellfish sanitation, fish inspection, environmental assessment as well as coastal and oceans management. He has also published research papers in those fields.
He originally started to work for Fisheries and Oceans Canada doing biological research and conducting fisheries stock assessment on shrimp (Pandalus borealis) and snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio). Subsequently, his work focused on fish safety inspection sampling strategies, bi-valve bio-toxin monitoring programs and auditing of HACCP based programs. After the creation of the Canada Food Inspection Agency, he managed the conversion of legacy fish inspection information systems to Y2K compliant systems and has led the development of inspection information systems for the Fish Program in Canada. In his most recent position, he was the regional director for Ecosystem Management at Fisheries and Oceans with responsibilities for environmental assessment, integrated coastal and oceans management as well as species at risk. He also led centres of expertise in coastal management and risk management.
He is also a member of the International Council for the Exploration of Sea (ICES) Working Group on Marine Planning and Coastal Zone Management (WGMPCZM). He also acquired significant work experience in international program development and capacity building in developing countries during 4 years of work at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). He has recently joined the Group of Experts on Risk Management in Regulatory Systems of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe.
