My research is mainly focussed on the biological and physical factors controlling the Biological Carbon Pump in in marine ecosystems. The following is a list of current research interests:
- The role of marine snow for carbon flux (particle dynamics and characteristics)
- Influence and linkages between highly productive shelf and open ocean carbon pump
- How zooplankton mediates and affects carbon flux and sequestration
- The trophodynamic impact of marine snow as a food source
- Plankton patchiness, thin layer formation and distribution patterns (small- to meso-scale)
- Zooplankton behavior (Individual to population level)
- Impact of climate change on plankton in marine ecosystems
- Underwater imaging systems and automatic classification approaches
I perform research using a variety of methods including in-situ observations with stationary and towed underwater imaging systems as well as lab- and shipboard experiments.
