Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
2020 has been more demanding than usual for most of us in our private and professional lives. Now we are heading for the Seasons holidays and the end of the year. To get you in the mood for the Christmas break, we have prepared a short clip for you. What exactly happens, when materials researchers from the Corrosion and Surface Technology department experiment with magnesium, is explained here in the short video.
The video shows a Christmas scene made of a magnesium alloy during plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) treatment in an electrolyte bath. One can see clearly visible sparking discharges on the surface and their change with time. The material is oxidized due to the plasma discharges and whitish snow-looking oxide-based ceramic layer is formed on the surface. This layer protects the metal from fast corrosion.
