After a time period of sixteen years the biennial PAT conference will be held in Germany again. Its objective is the presentation of recent significant changes in the patterns of materials research and development. PAT conferences are organized in close cooperation with John Wiley & Sons, editor of the scientific journal “Polymers for Advanced Technologies”. This well-known forum for polymer researchers was organized this year by Prof. Dr. Andreas Lendlein, Director of the Institute of Biomaterial Science, HZG and Conference Chair, strongly supported by Prof. Abraham J. Domb, Hebrew-University Jerusalem and editor-in-chief of the PAT journal.

The venue location of the scientific part of the program, starting on Monday 29 September 2013, is the Henry Ford Building of Freie Universität Berlin. The four-day program in Berlin is spread over 16 specialized sessions for particular subject areas of polymer chemistry. The oral contributions of the 7 renowned plenary speakers and 48 lectures from highly distinguished invited guests are complemented by several shorter oral presentations and a large poster session with more than 200 participants. The program includes a special session of the Helmholtz Virtual Institute “Multifunctional Biomaterials for Medicine” on Tuesday, 01 October 2013.

This is the first time in the PAT series that prizes are awarded for special achievements in polymer research. The Menachem Lewin Award, endowed with 2,5000 USD, is awarded during the Welcome Ceremony to a renowned senior scientist from academia or industry, associated with the PAT series and honored for his outstanding research achievements. This Life Time Achievement Award is launched by the journal in memory of Prof. Menachem Lewin, founder of the PAT journal and conference series, and is to be continued in future PAT conferences.

In addition six promising junior scientists, having demonstrated excellence in their academic achievements, are nominated for the Young Talents Award. The nominees present their innovative research during a special session to an independent awards selection committee which will subsequently select the recipient. The Young Talents Award will be awarded together with three prizes for best poster presentations.
