Learning in Bornholm: A new book summarizes the contents of a summer school on climate change in the Baltic Sea

The recently published book “Climate Impacts on the Baltic Sea: From Science to Policy” attempts to bridge the gap between science and politics regarding regional climate change in the Baltic Sea. The chapters of the book cover the contents of a summer school which took place on the island Bornholm in the summer of 2009 on climate change in the Baltic Sea region, its possible consequences and how to deal with them.

How can scientific expert knowledge be turned into political management strategies for the adaptation to climate change? This and other aspects of regional climate change and its impacts were discussed and studied intensively by 20 students and 12 international lectors for ten days in Nexo on the Danish island of Bornholm. The students which came from different subject areas gained insights into scientific as well as socio-economic subjects.

The lectures covered different methodologies in climate research, with a special emphasis on the question how scientific knowledge can be integrated into management plans, and the communication between politics and the public.

The expert lectures were turned into a text book, which is now published with the Springer Verlag as the sixth book in the series “Summer School of Environmental Research” of Helmholtz Centre Geesthacht. The book in English language is mainly aimed at scientists but also to decision-makers from politics and administration.

This summer school was co-organized by the International BALTEX Secretariat, hosted by Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, the Danish Technical University and the University of Gothenburg.
