FRG-1 is a research reactor with a thermal power of five megawatts. It is designed as a beam hole reactor, which means that the neutrons created by nuclear fission are transported to the research locations via beam tubes. FRG-1 became operational in 1958. Since then it has been continually updated to incorporate the latest scientific and technological developments. This includes a regular review of the operating guidelines and the operating instructions as well as regular and extensive training courses for personnel, comprehensive and repeated testing and the preventive maintenance of the facility’s important components. This enables the facility’s safety technology to be actively improved and results and suggestions to be implemented in close cooperation with the responsible regulatory authorities. Taken together, these measures guarantee that FRG-1 provides scientists with one of the most modern sources of neutrons in Europe.
