Integrated Global Observing Systems for Persistent Pollutants

General Information
Recently, within the past years in the framework of GEO - Task HE-02 “Tracking Pollutants” - global observation systems for mercury and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were developed to support the achievement of the goals of GEOSS and other on-going international Programs (i.e., UNEP Mercury Fate and Transport Program) and Conventions (i.e., Minamata, Stockholm Convention).
IGOSP overlays the above initiatives and aims to bring together and strengthen the European, national and regional R&I programmes in the domain of persistent pollutants. It will act thematically (vertical activity) by identifying monitoring gaps, develop a strategy for controlling data quality (QC) and quality assurance (QA), improve existing and newly developed sensor technologies, and merge in-situ and satellite information. IGOSP will develop and adopt Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) (horizontal activity) to enhance the collection and use of information.
The overarching goal of IGOSP is the development of a Transnational Environmental Observation System in Support of European & International Policies through the Integration of real-time monitoring data from various platforms, modelling tools and advanced global cyber-infrastructure for data sharing and interoperability.
IGOSP will support the achievement of the goals and objectives of Strand-3 of ERA-PLANET. This project has a strong foundation on GOS4M and GOS4POPs activities, which will allow the development and provision of the GEO Work Programme (2017-2019) priorities and objectives.
The main IGOSP activity foresees (1) the development of up-stream services to gather data from sites/sensors/platforms check their quality, catalogue information and publish services; (2) the implementation of mid-stream and down-stream services to define a common terminology for metadata; (3) design and implement a set of open and standard APIs and provide a set of web-based applications.
Hereon leads the work package entitled “Fostering integration of in-situ measurements and satellite data” and contributes to the work package on “From atmospheric modelling to services and tools”. IGOSP is funded in the frame of the Horizon 2020 ERANET ERA-PLANET (The European network for observing our changing planet).
