General Information
Given the undeniable fact of an uneven distribution of major research infrastructure (RI) in the Baltic Sea Region (BSR), which is clearly visible in the location of large-scale RI only in its western parts, it is also obvious that merely a small number of users of these facilities stem from countries from the eastern part of the Baltic Sea Region. Even smaller is the number of commercial users from SMEs or industry regardless of their nationality. There is a clear need to overcome these barriers in order to accelerate the process of innovation by enabling more commercial users – especially from countries in the BSR which do not host large-scale RIs – to benefit from world class research infrastructures to develop new products or services for the knowledge society of tomorrow.
Among the greatest deficits – aside from the common overbooking of a particular instrument at a specific RI – is the general lack of information on offered services and opportunities which would be of potentially great value for SME/industrial users and a lack of adequate service/support for non-scientific users. SCIENCE LINK will address these challenges by establishing a network of contact and consultation points in the Baltic Sea Region designed to provide convenient information on opportunities offered by existing and currently planned or implemented large-scale research infrastructures in the BSR. It will offer valuable advice and support in finding appropriate instruments and services tailored for the specific needs of non-scientific commercial users from SMEs.
The planned activities will have a strong impact on the commercial sector especially in the eastern European countries of the BSR by increasing the number of RI users from this region; it will clearly affect the innovation system of these countries as it will be an excellent chance to transform results of intensive research into brand new applications and services.
