General Information
FITNET is a networking project designed to promote the development of a European Fitness-for-Purpose Procedure for assessing the structural integrity of metallic welded or non-welded structures transmitting loads. In particular it embodies techniques for dealing with defects known or postulated to be present in a structure together with the possible growth of such defects by a range of mechanisms and the assessment techniques required to evaluate failure risk. It is intended to provide an umbrella scheme into which results from EC-funded projects (including European Coal and Steel Committee, ECSC), national programmes and in-kind funded contributions are harnessed to the common goal of a fitness-for-service procedure based on European advanced technology. The FITNET TN aims to generate the following outputs: 1) Definition of a comprehensive fitness for purpose procedure which will be submitted to CEN for adoption as an EU standard. This will cover fracture, fatigue, creep and corrosion. 2) Validation of the procedure using existing data and definition of those aspects which are not validated because of the absence of data. 3) The formation of a PAN-European group of experts, from industry and academia, which can a) define future R&D needs for the Commission, b) produce training information for both industry and academia, c) act as a point of reference for expertise, and d) contribute to the work of other networks which will rely on the definition of fitness for purpose procedures.
