Video: North Sea Coast under Climate Change (Part 1)

The sea level of the North Sea is rising, storm surges are increasing and it rains more frequently and more heavily in winter. The water is coming from everywhere and is threatening the coastal regions of northern Germany. Dykes alone are not enough to withstand the consequences of climate change in the long term. Researchers from the Helmholtz Centre Hereon are calling for new, sustainable measures for resilient coastal development. The new film production from Hereon's North German Coastal and Climate Office shows where these can be applied. Teil 1 (Hereon YouTube Kanal)

Storm surges. Sea level rise. Too much rain in winter. Climate change is hitting the north German coasts and their catchment areas hard. Extreme events are increasing. But how can we counteract this? Coastal researcher Dr Insa Meinke explains, for example, how we need to strengthen the dykes and give the water more space inland. The questions are asked by tech journalist Svea Eckert and Hereon press spokesperson Dr Torsten Fischer.

Offshore wind farms are the size of small towns and the rotors are so huge that they have a massive impact on air movements. This is not without consequences for the environment. In an interview with tech journalist Svea Eckert, geophysicist Nils Christiansen explains how plants, animals and humans adapt and what effects can be expected in the long term.
