PhytoDive
The diversity of phytoplankton and their productivity is investigated with the help of satellite Earth observation data from Ocean Colour. The main focus is on global sea areas and the transition from the open ocean, the shelf areas to the coasts, as well as the marginal seas. Important phytoplankton groups, some of which may occur in Harmful Algae Blooms, will be identified locally and observed spatiotemporally. Operational and climatological ocean colour data will be used to investigate anomalies and changes in blooms and species composition. Depending on the phytoplankton groups and regional conditions, important parameters for climate studies such as the primary production of phytoplankton and the associated carbon cycle will be estimated.
