Underwater Plankton and Particle Observatory

Long-term data on the dynamics of particles and organisms.

Near Helgoland, we collect long-term data on the dynamics of particles and organisms using an underwater observatory.

In cooperation with thescientific diving team on Helgoland the Biological Carbon Pump Department equipped a vertical profiling system with an underwater microscope camera (CPICS) with which they are able to take images of small particles and organisms. The vertical profiling system moreover collects data on standard water characteristics such as temperature and conductivity. The collected images are transmitted from the camera to our servers in “near real time” and further analyzed using machine learning techniques.
