Pathways and needs towards a Baltic regional spatial data infrastructure for maritime spatial planning

MSPDAT

Project timeline
Start:
May 2017
Duration:
19 months
End:
November 2018
General Information
MSPDAT aims at enhancing the capacity of Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) and facilitate transnational coherence in MSP by supporting the collection of best available MSP data in the Baltic Sea Region (BSR), by means of identifying MSP data needs, common data standards, and societal mechanism to use, interpret and share data. The project intends to facilitate the work of the HELCOM-VASAB MSP Data Expert Sub-Group and help with implementation of the Regional Baltic MSP Roadmap 2013-2020. The main activities for MSPDAT are foreseen as follows: 1) Existing and available environmental data will be assessed for relevance in MSP. Gaps of data needs will be Identified in a comprehensive report on gaps and status of environmental data for use in MSP. 2) Based on conclusions of the report (1), recommendations for improvements will be developed - e.g. data accessibility, data storage formats - in close co-operation with stakeholders. 3) Taking into account the results other relevant initiatives, as well as developed recommendations under (2), common standards for environmental data and other properties for de-centralised data infrastructure will be defined and their operability tested.
