Development of new materials and processes to enhance specialty gas separations

SPECSEP

Project timeline
Start:
March 2003
Duration:
36 months
End:
February 2006
General Information
SPECSEP concerns the study and development of new advanced materials - nanoporous carbon hollow-fiber membranes and membrane-supported functionalized absorbents - and their implementation for three particular gas separation processes: recycling of anesthetic streams in closed anesthetic circuits (both nitrous oxide and xenon-based systems), removing carbon dioxide from life-support systems and separation of high-purity oxygen from air. The project involves several levels of development, going from material synthesis and fundamental characterization, to process implementation and assembly of functional models.
