Study of microstructure of free volume in high permeability polymers: Comparison with microporous sorbents

SMPP

Project timeline
Start:
December 1999
Duration:
27 months
End:
February 2002
General Information
The project is aiming at an elucidation of detailed structure of free volume in high gas permeability (large free volume) glassy materials. Another objective of the project is an investigation of structure - property relationships in high free volume polymers. Three features are important in the planned research: a series of polymers with regularly varied structure will be prepared and studied; several methods including gas permeation and sorption studies, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy, computer simulation, and other will be applied to the aforementioned group of high free volume polymers; in probing of free volume in the polymers, a comparison will be made of PAL spectra of glassy polymers and zeolites, having the sizes of cages well determined from X-ray studies. Hence, deeper insight can be expected in understanding of free volume microstructure of high free volume polymers, potential membrane materials.
