The Solid State Materials Processing department of the Institute of Materials Mechanics, at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon is looking for a Postdoc (m/f/d), possible starting date after June 15th, 2021, initially limited to 2 years with possible extension by additional 2 years, within the ERC Consolidator Grant "Modelling Assisted Solid State Materials Development and Additive Manufacturing". The position is intended to support experimental and modelling related activities within the ERC Consolidator Grant with the focus on the development of customized value-added wire materials and their application in additive manufacturing. For this purpose a number of numerical approaches will be employed to reach a fundamental understanding of the composition-process-microstructure-property relationships along the proposed process chain. Focus of the current position is the modelling of mechanisms at the microscale via the application of different numerical approaches.
- execution and responsible handling of the research project funded by the European Union, i.e. the ERC Consolidator Grant "Modelling Assisted Solid State Materials Development and Additive Manufacturing"
- support and management of modelling-related tasks within the project
- development of thermodynamic models based on diffusion theory coupled with the CALPHAD method to describe in particular the precipitation kinetics for application in solid state processes
- support in the development of micromechanical models based on multiphase-field and crystal plasticity approach to describe the microstructure evolution
- establishing fundamental understanding between phases/microstructure and processing variables for solid-state materials development and additive manufacturing
- publication of the results in scientific journals and at conferences
- University degree in the field of mechanical engineering, materials science, physics, computer science or comparable (master's degree or equivalent)
- PhD in computational mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science or comparable with focus on modelling and simulation of processes and materials
- ability to work scientifically, usually proven by a strong publication track record
- good knowledge of microstructural evolution in metals, in particular in terms of modelling
- knowledge in the field of microstructure/thermodynamic modelling
- knowledge of precipitation and recrystallization processes in aluminium alloys is advantageous
- knowledge in DFT calculations and machine learning is advantageous
- very good oral and written expression in English, German is advantageous
- experience in supervising graduate students
- ability to work in a team and commitment to the work programme
